Halloween: Create a Pumpkin Family!

Kids will love creating a family grouping of these pumpkin characters. They’ll add a fun, personalized touch to a Halloween-decorated foyer or front porch.

Materials Needed:

  • a variety of pumpkins (one to represent each family member)
  • parsnips and carrots
  • sharp knife and cutting board
  • black craft foam
  • scissors
  • toothpicks
  • hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
  • black permanent marker
  • hats, sunglasses and other accessories

Gather Pumpkins

Select pumpkins to represent each member of the family.

Wash Parsnips and Carrots

Scrub off any dirt or debris clinging to the carrots and parsnips, and choose one or the other to represent each family member’s nose.

Add Nose and Facial Features

Push a veggie nose into the front of each pumpkin (Image 1). Use a black marker to draw on various facial features, such as smiles, eyes and freckles (Image 2).

Personalize Pumpkins

Use scissors to cut various facial elements (e.g., mustaches and eyelashes) out of a sheet of black foam. Use hot glue to attach them to the pumpkins. Add hats, glasses, jewelry or other accessories to personalize and help identify which family member each pumpkin represents.
